While he was in peak of his career in continuing his government service, Mr. Subhas Chandra Choudhury, the Founder and Chairman of the Trust was inspired by a book called ‘Plan for retirement-The best years of your life’, written by Mr. C. Northcourt Parkinson and Mr. M.K.Rustom Ji which he found in New Delhi airport. Accordingly, he visioned to work after retirement in the field of educational development to benefit the needy rural children, youth, institutes and also get personal satisfaction.

So, in December 1992, to create permanent human assets for society, the organization started to work in a small village of Jagatisinghpur district of Odisha called Nailo. With this humble beginning, initially the educational intervention was started in this village high school through competitions among the students in various subjects, i.e English essay, Odia essay and General Knowledge etc. Seven high schools were selected from the nearby areas for this program and a competitive environment was created among the students. Students were awarded 3 prizes in each subjects for winning competitions and one teacher from each school were provided some honorarium for preparing the students for this program. Local Tahasildars, Collectors and other government dignitaries were part of these events. Sri Kishore Chandra Mohanty, Headmaster of Jashovanta Vidyapitha was one of the key persons spearheading the program.

The government of Odisha started a School Adoption Programs in which the option was provided for a philanthropist to sponsor from a list of things required by the school for it’s overall development. Sri Ashok Tripathy, IAS, Secretary, Government of Odisha, spearheaded this scheme, and VECT was the first one to adopt 3 high schools and it’s requirements, I.e IRC Village government high school, Bhubaneswar, Jashobanta Vidyapeeth, Nailo and Sadhucharan Vidyapeeth, Nanpur. In this adoption process, extra classrooms were constructed and furniture provided, additional temporary teachers were appointed and headmasters were brought to these schools transferring from other schools. Overall quality enhancement was done in these 3 schools continuing the supports for 6 years. Computer education programs were made available in these schools as well to bridge digital divide.

Finally, the educational support program could take the shape of educational scholarship for the needy and meritorious students. In this process, many national and international partners and donors such as Sri Bajrang Power and Ispat Limited (SBPIL), Naik Foundation, Fair N lovely, FALCON, Odisha Stevedores Limited (OSL), Shradha Foundation, Rail CII Carbon Vizag Limited, M/S M.G. Mohanty, SEEDS India, Earthstone Worldwide Scholarship program (EWSP), North South Foundation (NSF), Foundation For Excellence (FFE), Learning for Better World (LBW) and many individual supporters came forward to sponsor this program.

The number of beneficiaries in VECT has been increasing year after year. The support for educational courses is being diversified now. The collaboration with donor agencies as well as with implementing partner institutes are also increasing. The scouting and selecting very bright and needy students from various Government colleges and Universities across Odisha is growing year after year. VECT has reached almost 10,000 youth beneficiaries through it’s scholarship support programs.
